This site is not a shop window. It is part of the work’s apparatus, like the darkroom or the wall of a room: the place where the plates meet whoever looks at them when they are not hanging. It does not contain them; it accompanies them. And, like them, it shows a part knowing it is a part: while this page is being read, the materials they photograph go on returning, at their own pace, to the state we took them from.
That is why it follows the same rules as the photographs. It shows four plates out of eighteen, and says so. With a one-meter ruler, it gives the scale a screen cannot give, instead of pretending a size. Nothing moves faster than reading. Texts by others appear in full in the language they were written in, with short quotations translated; the artist’s own, in both of his languages. And it does not watch whoever looks at it: there are no trackers, and nothing loads from anywhere else.
Conceived and designed by Mariano García-Valiño. This site is bespoke. No design studio, no templates and no third-party code: every line of code was written for this site, and no detail went without the author’s decision. Spectral and IBM Plex Mono, hosted on the site itself. No trackers. The site only remembers, in your browser, the language you chose; the Studio uses a cookie to let you in, which deletes itself after two hours.
Carga.
|---|---|---|
| Servidor | 0,04 | 0,07 |
| Red | 0,05 | 0,07 |
| Aparato de quien mira | 0,10 | 0,16 |
| Total | ≈ 0,2 | ≈ 0,3 |

Code. HTML, CSS and JavaScript written for this site, with no libraries or frameworks: 35 KB of styles and 57 KB of code (9 and 21 KB compressed). They are downloaded once and stay in the browser.
Images. From the 16-bit masters, in sRGB. Each image exists in three or four sizes, from 480 to 2,000 px, and each screen receives the smallest one that keeps it sharp: on a phone, about 2.5 image pixels for every screen point. WebP was tested: with these textures it is no lighter than JPEG, so it is not used.
Weight. The home page on opening: 1.3 MB on a phone, 2 MB on a computer. The Vast Within, scrolled to the end: 7 MB on a phone, 3.6 MB on a computer.
Loading. The image in view arrives first; the rest follow. Meanwhile, each image holds its place in its average color: nothing moves as the page loads.
Footprint. Three things are involved in getting a page onto a screen: the server that stores and sends it, the network that carries it (cables, antennas, routers), and the device it is viewed on, phone or computer, with what it consumes and a share of what it cost to make. A visit to the home page downloads 1.3 MB on a phone and 2 MB on a computer, and its footprint, by the most complete method, breaks down as follows:
| g CO₂e | Phone | Computer |
|---|---|---|
| Server | 0.04 | 0.07 |
| Network | 0.05 | 0.07 |
| Viewer’s device | 0.10 | 0.16 |
| Total | ≈ 0.2 | ≈ 0.3 |
Scrolling through all of The Vast Within costs about one gram on a phone and half a gram on a computer. The viewer’s device weighs more than the page. Counting only the network, as other studies do, the same visit costs a thousandth of a gram: the figure depends on what one decides to count.
